Massey University, New Zealand
Massey University is NZ's university for industry and society. Two key Institutes and their associated Research Centres play a vital role in FOOD-FRENZ: the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences (IVABS) and the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health (IFNHH). IVABS contains an internationally accredited Veterinary School and three research centres. The EpiCentre provides research and training in veterinary epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, risk assessment, microbial food safety and public health, and plays a major role in biosecurity and emergency response in NZ, Europe and Asia.
The EpiCentre delivers surveillance tools with applications in Europe and has formal research links with individuals and organisations in the UK, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. The other research centres focus on animal welfare issues and infections diseases. The IFNHH has 44 years of experience in food science and technology and a world-wide reputation in value-adding to foods e.g. development of avocado oil as a high value gourmet food. Research expertise includes bone and joint health, immune and gut health, gastrointestinal function, nutrition studies, human and animal nutrition modelling, bioactive ingredients and functional foods, food characterisation and formulation, smart food processing and defining and improving key attributes of whole foods.
