The University of Newcastle (UNEW), UK
UNEW is one of the world’s leading universities in agriculture and food science. In addition to its participation in more than 100 ongoing EU-funded projects it has a track record in securing funding from the major UK food and agriculture funders. UNEW has strong connections with NZ and the other major research environments outside the EU. The Faculties of Science, Agriculture and Engineering and the Medical Faculty collaborate extensively on research and teaching in the area of food and health, including the joint degree programme in Food and Human Nutrition. UNEW has a well renowned Human Nutrition Research Centre that acts as a focus for food, nutrition and health research. This centre has excellent links with the food industry and has expertise in nutrient-gene interactions and in nutrition though the different lifestages (nutrition and ageing).
UNEW also has the leading role in the North East Food & Drink initiative, which aims to bring together business and research in the North of England to promote sustainable development and competitiveness of the food and drink industry, including development of more nutritious products and processes with improved environmental impact.
