Massey University

NZ’s university for industry and society, Massey University, welcomes visiting EU scientists to our two key institutes involved in FOOD-FRENZ: the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health (IFNHH) and the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences (IVABS).

The IFNHH has 44 years of experience in food science and technology and a world-wide reputation in value-adding to foods e.g. development of avocado oil as a high value gourmet food. Research expertise includes bone and joint health, immune and gut health; gastrointestinal function; nutrition studies; human and animal nutrition modelling; bioactive ingredients and functional foods; food science and technology, including food characterisation and formulation; smart food processing; and defining and improving key attributes of whole foods.

Within IVABS the veterinary school enjoys international high regard and is one of the first outside the USA to achieve American Veterinary Medical Association accreditation. We are home to the largest veterinary epidemiology training and research centre in Australasia, the EpiCentre. This is widely considered to be one of the leading groups in the world which offers expertise in the control of disease in animal populations, the transmission of disease from animals to humans, molecular epidemiology and hazards in food of animal origin. The group is distinguished by its commitment to long-term research goals and its innovative uses of epidemiological techniques in research and problem-solving.

Together with the veterinary school the Animal Welfare Science and Bioethics Centre (AWSBC) provides specialist welfare science directly relevant to issues of ‘food acceptability’. Welfare regulations are integrated with food safety and quality issues such as the transport and holding of horned cattle and pre-slaughter feed deprivation. An emerging issue is the welfare implications associated with the organic production of food animals.

Massey University warmly welcomes recipients of SSA European Fellowships involved in human nutrition, animal health and welfare for food and food safety.
