HortResearch
HortResearch is a world-class fruit science company with more than 500 staff who work at 10 sites around NZ. We use our unique resources in fruit, plants and environmentally sustainable production systems to produce innovative fruit and food products.
HortResearch has earned considerable acclaim as the name behind development of ZESPRI™ GOLD kiwifruit, ENZA JAZZ™ apples and a range of other successful cultivars including blueberries and peaches. The breadth of our research is a great strength. For example, we are able to connect our germplasm and fruit genetics to our functional food initiatives, through crop production, postharvest science, genomics and consumer science, to provide integrated programmes which produce both innovative science and novel commercial products.
Key food research areas include:
Foods for Health;
Human Health and Performance;
Nutrigenomics;
Formulation and Delivery; and
Bioproduction.
Our Sensory and Consumer scientists are involved in research on product attributes as well as consumer attitudes and beliefs that impact on food choice. Consumer perceptions of innovative and emerging technologies are among our research interests. Another strong focus for our research is sustainability. NZ’s productive landscapes and natural estate are vitally dependent on the value of the natural capital of our soils, water and biodiversity. NZ’s horticultural systems seek to create premium fruit products through sustainable production.
