Fonterra is NZ's largest company contributing 7.0% of GDP and 20% of exports. Fonterra processes over twenty billion litres of milk in 180 dairy plants into over 1000 different products and export those products to 120 countries. Of the fourteen billion litres of milk that Fonterra processes in NZ only 5.0% is consumed domestically with the remainder exported. Fonterra has significant internal R&D capabilities with facilities in Australia, Singapore, China, Malaysia, Germany, Mexico and NZ, including the Fonterra Research Centre in Palmerston North with 350 staff, four thousand square metres of pilot plant and four thousand square metres of laboratories. Fonterra is looking to external relationships and collaborations to augment these internal capabilities.
