Animal health and welfare for food production
Consumers of EU and NZ foods are often concerned about the health and welfare of food animals. Inclusion of welfare-friendly systems is an important part of research in Area 5.4.1: Total Food Chain and Area 5.4.6: Safer and Environmentally Friendly Production Methods and Technologies and Healthier Foodstuffs. NZ standards are very high due to their desire to maintain their unique ‘disease-free’ health status resulting from their geographical isolation. Sharing experiences between the EU and NZ will allow further debate on how research providers with expertise in animal health and welfare can work with industry to meet consumer expectations.
